The purpose of a camera, in my opinion, is to catch something during that exact moment. Time never stops, and the world around us will never stop changing. Things can drastically change in just little of 30 seconds. If we catch a specific moment with our camera, we are able to examine the world around us, and you're able to look back at it, and refer back to it. With our eyes, we can't necessarily "refer" back to a specific moment because things are constantly changing.
An extension of your comment is that a camera teaches us to see. The more you photograph, the more you will notice things that need to be photographed. Also, if you add up all the actual "instances" that a person photographs in a lifetime (1/60 sec here, 1/125 sec there) it will be only a matter to minutes. But the amount of information contained in all those instances will be immense.
